Tick… tick… tick… tick… The clock keeps ticking rhythmically, tick after tick. I lay awake in my bed, the white sheets covering my head, my pure white pillow covering my ears as I press them in harder to try to block out the monotone ticking.

Tick… tick… t—The clock goes crashing into the white walls and breaks into billions of pieces. My hand goes back to my pillow and I cover my ears once again.
Tick… tick… tick… The nurse brings in another clock and places it on the metal tray next to my bed.

    Tick… tick… tick… tick… The ticking goes on. Each second passes. 1… 2… 3… 4… Now a minute… An hour…

Tick… tick… tick… tick… tick… The walls of the room are closing in. The white walls begin to cave in and the air pressure increases. Each moment, the ability to breath becomes a challenge. I close my eyes and squeeze my pillow to my head even harder. The ticking won’t stop. The walls are coming in closer. The air pressure is rising. The temperature is beginning to escalate. 60 degrees, 70 degrees, up and up.

Tick… tick… tick… tick… tic—The clock explodes from the increased pressure in the room. I begin to gag and choke as available oxygen decreases. The ticking never stops, even when there is no clock to look at.

Tick… tick… tick… tick, tick, tick, tick. The ticking gets faster. My heart begins to take the rhythm of the ticking. Thump, thump, thump, thump.

Thump, thump, tick, thump, tick, tick, tick, tick… The room is silent. The ticking stops. The thumping stops. The doctors come in with surgical masks on and remove the body in the bed. There is a pillow clenched to its head and the eyes pried shut. Tape covers a once gaping mouth and long strands of rope fall limp off the body’s legs and torso.

    Experiment 1, failure.
